Useful Software: Monitor and Control Bandwidth Traffic with NetLimiter

NetLimiter is a great application that displays bandwidth usage on a computer or server. It's really useful when you want to see how much bandwidth a specific process is using.

You can use NetLimiter to set download/upload transfer rate limits for applications or even single connection and monitor their internet traffic.

Along with this unique feature, Netlimiter offers comprehensive set of internet statistical tools. It includes real-time traffic measurement and long-term per-application internet traffic statistics

There are 3 versions, all can display the bandwidth usage of applications as well as history graphs but only the shareware/full versions can limit bandwidth of processes (the shareware versions costs, while the Freeware version is free).

Useful Software: Startup Delayer - delays the startup of applications when windows loads

Startup Delayer does just what it says; it delays the startup of applications when windows loads. By default when windows loads (after you log in), all your programs load at the same time. This can seriously slow down the load time as all the applications are competing for CPU and Hard Disk accesses. Startup Delayer solves this by allowing you to setup how many seconds after Windows has started to load each program.

Startup Delayer is freeware and compatible with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/XP64/Vista You can download it from http://www.r2.com.au/page/products/show/startup-delayer/

Useful Software: QTTabBar - extension that gives Windows Explorer windows a tab bar

QTTabBar is an extension that gives Windows Explorer windows a tab bar (similar to Firefox/IE Tabs). Rather than using a separate program that displays multiple views, you can keep on using your Windows Explorer! This is very useful when dealing with multiple folders since you can have them all in the same window and switching to them is easy.

QTTabBar

There is some tweaking you will need to do to get it to display. Once you install it and log off, go to Internet Explorer. Right click the favorites bar and select "QT TabBar" and "QT Tab Standard Buttons". Once these are visible in your Internet Explorer, they will be visible in Windows Explorer. QTTabBar is freeware and is officially compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista. I have personally tested it on two Windows 2003 Server boxes and it works fine with no problems. You can download it at http://qttabbar.wikidot.com

Animal Logic uses FireDaemon for Automation

Animal Logic

Happy Feet, 300, Matrix Productions

"The very simple service definition, automated process restarts and clean interface of the management console provides us with a "configure once and forget" solution, which maintains itself."

An Interview with Jakub Krajcovic

So what does Animal Logic do? Established in 1991, Animal Logic quickly earned a reputation as one of the world's leading design, visual effects and animation companies. With studios in Sydney, Australia and Los Angeles, California, Animal Logic continues to produce award-winning work for a diverse international clientele. Some of our productions include Harry Potter, 28 Weeks Later, AustraliaMoulin Rouge, 300 and the Oscar winning Happy Feet.

What were the challenges you were facing? Delivering media to several playback and grading systems presented an ongoing challenge for Animal Logic’s technical staff. It was not possible to remove the deeply entrenched legacy system and start from scratch because of the prohibitive costs of development time and the effect it would pose for production. The media deliveries were not managed, this required a user to be logged on to the Windows console and there was no way of automatically restarting them in case one of the processes failed, except for manual operator intervention.

Why did you choose FireDaemon? FireDaemon showed promise as a viable solution. And indeed, within a few clicks after installation it turned our previous system into an automated and well managed delivery infrastructure. The very simple service definition, automated process restarts and clean interface of the management console provides us with a "configure once and forget" solution, which maintains itself. FireDaemon‘s Trinity provides the added benefits of a web interface allowing us to manage several FireDaemon enabled delivery workstations from anywhere, without actually requiring a user to log in. FireDaemon has delivered a very strong management layer on top of our existing system without any ongoing costs.

Guess what? Daily deliveries have been turned into a structured, managed and self-maintaining solution, which has minimal support time. FireDaemon has enabled us to focus on other things because we now know that we don't have to worry about getting data where it should be.

Useful Software: Secure Password Manager: Any Password

The biggest threat to online security and computer security are easy to guess passwords. Most people choose easy to guess passwords and this is very bad. That plus the prevalence of social networking sites makes it very easy for hackers to guess your password. Aside from guessing, they can use brute-force dictionary attacks that can break passwords in a matter of minutes or hours. You can stop this from happening by choose a complex alpha-numeric password. Remembering an alpha-numeric password is difficult and sometimes next to impossible. An example of this is a password like 2Gkb4S2q. An even better password is one that uses characters like question marks and exclamation points in addition to letters and numbers (eg. &%sZ+VLl). This is where Any Password comes into play. Any Password is a password manager. You can store passwords as well as other sensitive information in its database. The database itself can be passworded and its encrypted to prevent outside snooping. It also includes a random password generator.

Any Password is compatible with Microsoft Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP http://www.anypassword.com/free/index.html To use it on Vista, you will need to purchase the Pro version. http://www.anypassword.com/pro/index.html

GoldSRC/SRCDS RCON Security

Every GoldSRC and SRCDS server needs an RCON password. RCON passwords allow you to remotely control your server from the console or a 3rd party tool like HLSW. Lately there have been more hackers who try to brute force guess your password. If they do guess your password, they can take complete control of your server like ban/unban players, change the hostname and change cvars. There are a few things you can do to keep this from happening. The first thing is to pick a password that is not based on a dictionary word. It's best if your password is over 12 characters long and has a mixture of letter, numbers and symbols. The symbols are key to make it extremely hard to crack. A good example password would be something like: ^#&[email protected]*RsG0. Another thing you can do to stop or at least slow the hackers is to enable rcon protection cvars. Use the following code in your "server.cfg" file (works in GoldSRC and SRCDS):
sv_rcon_banpenalty 60 sv_rcon_maxfailures 10 sv_rcon_minfailures 5 sv_rcon_minfailuretime 45
The code does the following: sv_rcon_banpenalty : Number of minutes to ban users who fail rcon authentication sv_rcon_maxfailures : Max number of times a user can fail rcon authentication before being banned sv_rcon_minfailures : Number of times a user can fail rcon authentication in sv_rcon_minfailuretime before being banned sv_rcon_minfailuretime : Number of seconds to track failed rcon authentications This should slow down the hackers. It won't stop them completely though.
